I was seventy seven days post transplant and then it hit me, intense pain and severe diarrhea. I had been on an antibiotic so I tossed up the symptoms to that. I was readmitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with Graft vs Host Disease or GvHD. GvHD can come on at anytime post stem cell transplant. Basically it is when your new immune system doesn't recognize your own tissues or organs as self and attacks them. This can happen anywhere in or on the body such as the skin, eyes, GI system, lungs, and even the genital area. One thing I learned from my experience, if anything seems "off" in the body, don't be shy in telling your doctor. Don't make assumptions as to why your eyes are extra dry and irritated, or your mouth isn't as moist, or maybe your joints seem stiff. Let your doctor know what's going on. It must be caught early and treated for the best outcome. I highly recommend this book to give you more information about GvHD, the signs and symptoms and the treatments available for it.
